In celebration of the birthdate of Alexander von Humboldt in September, Queensland-based Humboldtians and their families gathered on Thursday, 28 August 2014, at the Brisbane German Club in Woollangabba. The club exists since 1883 and has become a landmark in Brisbane not only for German-Australians, but for everyone enjoying German culture and traditions including a regular “Stammtisch”. It is a wonderful place to taste a wide selection of excellent German beers and German meals. This year we had 26 Humboldtians attending our annual dinner and were joined by representatives from the German Honorary Consulate in Brisbane, Detlev Sulzer and Claudia Luettringhaus (pictured), who tackled the famous over-sized pork knuckle. It was a most enjoyable gathering, a great way for Humboldtians to stay in touch, initiate scientific collaborations, and hear news about the Association such as the upcoming symposium in Victoria ‘Celebration of German Contributions to Australian Science’, and the next biennial meeting of the AAvHF in 2015 in Tasmania.
